Not a very good night. We were supposed to see a microdermabrasion demo at 8:00 pm, but I got a client and missed it. That’s not what made it a bad night though … the bad part is that the client wanted a facial, an eyebrow wax, AND a bikini wax. I’ve never done a bikini wax before and I’m terrified! This is and has been my biggest fear since I was deciding to go to school for this! I’ve never refused to take a client before, but I told the head instructor that I was very uncomfortable with it. I didn’t even know the proper way to drape a client!
I’m sure she was a little annoyed with me, but she got another student to do the waxing anyway and I did the facial. While my client was being waxed, my instructor pulled my whole class into the practice room so she could show us how to drape a client for a bikini wax and went over how to wax the area. I thanked her for that and after watching it I did feel better and a little more confident. Am I the only one who has been terrified of doing a bikini wax? Or how about waxing in general? Any suggestions on how to get over the fear of waxing?

The best way to learn and be comfortable with waxing esp. (or other skin care services) is not only observing a few times but also HANDS on !! with the instructor observing you and possibly correcting you. It is the best and in my mind the only way !
Good luck! Jana

Before working on clients you must have hands on training, not only observing. Your trainer should observe you and possibly correct you.Good luck:)!

As an owner of an training facility I am sad to hear that a group of students watched as a paying client was being waxed. I am equally sad to read the number of problems students are having with proper demonstrations & practical! Keep on your instructors for proper demonstrations & supervision while you are learning any new service. Remember you have paid for instruction … GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR!!
All the best to all new aestheticians. I have been an aesthetician for 21 years & training for 15 years. When I worked as an instructor for someone else I often felt sad & how we had to do things. Owning my own training facilty has been fantastic because I can train the way I know works!
Good Luck ladies

Jana and Deanne: Thanks for all the advice. I just want to clarify that my teacher did NOT show us a waxing demo on a paying client. One of the students was a model and our teacher showed us the proper way to drape the client, etc. It actually was a good demo and one we had been wanting to see. Our teacher has told us quite a few times that if we want them in the room with us to help us out with a client, we just need to ask them and they’ll be there. And you’re right, we do need to be more proactive in asking for help and make sure we get the best education we can. Thanks again!

Not only several observations, but have someone with some experience do a wax on you. Once you know how it feels to be in your clients shoes you will be more comfortable explaining the treatment and more confident giving it

Nicole: One of my teachers waxed my eyebrows once and I couldn’t believe when she was tweezing them, I didn’t feel a thing. Even when she waxed me, it didn’t hurt. She was really good at it and it’s really inspired me to get that good. I agree that it helps to know how it feels. Thanks!

I always get nervous with bikini waxes but I have tried to have a better attitude going into and just act as if. I take a deep breath and know I am a student not a 10 year veteran. If something goes wrong I get an instructor pronto. I ask for waxings now so that I can slowly get rid of my nervouness.
Thanks

Patty: I, too, have to remind myself constantly that I’m a student. What I should’ve done in this instance is instead of refusing to take the client, I should’ve asked my teacher if she would come in the room with me as long as the client was comfortable with it. I also forget that the teachers are very willing to help us out, but if I’m having trouble with something I really need to speak up and ask for help. That’s a good thing you’re doing in asking for waxing clients to help you overcome your nervousness. I need to do that! Thanks for the comment!
