Makeup and Eyelashes

Colleen and I were very busy today. We both came to school without any makeup on so that we could do each other’s makeup and get a signoff. It had been a long time since I did anyone’s makeup besides my own and it was fun! I did her makeup for daytime and it turned out pretty good. There are a lot of things I need to work on though. One is being able to get closer to the client and really look at what I’m doing. When giving a facial or waxing, you’re close to the client and touching them, but usually their eyes are closed and they’re not looking right at you! :)

We ended up getting kicked out of the makeup room because one of the girls had a client, so we went in the classroom, and I’m finishing up her makeup when a girl I work with comes in. I didn’t know she was coming in and it was a nice surprise. So I abandoned Colleen for an eyebrow wax and facial. I think I’m getting more comfortable with waxing, but I totally didn’t follow the protocol!

I’m really embarrassed to say this, but I didn’t cleanse, I forgot to put powder on the hair, and I forgot to put Vaseline on the hair I did NOT want to remove! I can’t believe I forgot to do all that! Thankfully, she just needed a cleanup, and I realized my mistake before I got to the other eyebrow! That was a really close one and hopefully I learned another lesson!

When I was done, I finished Colleen’s makeup and put fake eyelashes on her for another signoff. Those things are kind of hard to put on. We use the individual lashes instead of a strip, and I can’t tell you how many I lost before I even got them up to her eye! I finally got them on, and they looked pretty good. One was a little crooked, but it wasn’t too bad.

I was looking forward to having my makeup done and eyelashes put on me, but Colleen ended up getting a client, so we’ll have to do it another day. It was a very fun and productive day.

While cleansing is definitely important before waxing, I don’t like to use powder when doing an eyebrow wax because I’m afraid it will get in their eyes. Plus, unlike other areas it’s very important to see exactly where you’re waxing. As for the Vaseline, it does help, but it’s not necessary. Just remember that even if you get wax on hair that you don’t want to remove, as long as you don’t cover it with your strip, it won’t be pulled out. I get so nervous when I see people put a strip over the whole eyebrow when waxing them, I only put it over the hairs I’m trying to take out just to be safe!

And don’t beat yourself for forgetting little things like that. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat down to begin a facial and realized that I forgot to put the client’s headband on or I didn’t turn the music on or I didn’t even get any towels!!! But after practicing, practicing, practicing it will become so routine that you do all the steps automatically.

Ashley! I know what you mean about being nervous when you see people putting a strip over the entire eyebrow! I don’t do that because I’m so afraid I’ll wax all the hair off! I usually put the edge of the strip next to the hair I DON’T want to remove and only have the hair I WANT to remove under the strip. I don’t know if that’s a good way to do it or not, but it works for me. As long as I take my time and pay attention to what I’m doing, I’m okay. The last few eyebrows I’ve waxed went really good and I felt so much more comfortable doing it. Thanks for the advice and for sharing your “forgetful” stories! I appreciate it! Hope to hear from you again!
