Last week in class we watched a DVD about extractions. This is something I was really interested in watching because I’m not very good at doing extractions. The DVD showed you how to do extractions in different ways by using your index fingers wrapped in esthetic wipes, two cotton-tipped applicators, a comedone extractor and a lancet. We’ve been told that in Illinois it is illegal for estheticians to use a lancet.

I have to say that the person doing the extractions made each technique seem very easy. Even though I have been unsuccessful at extractions, watching this DVD made me realize that at least I’m using the right technique. I just need to work on getting them out.

Earlier this year I bought a DVD about skin analysis and extractions, but I haven’t had a chance to watch it. After watching the DVD on extractions, I decided to watch my DVD over the weekend. I’m so glad I did because it was so informative.

A dermatologist narrated it and showed different clients with not only different concerns, but different skin types. He went over wrinkles, face lifts, peels, Botox, sun damage, liver spots, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation and extractions using a comedone extractor.  He pointed out moles, open comedones, closed comedones, pustules, sebborheic keratosis, psoriasis and so much more. I felt like I learned so much from this one DVD.

I have a bunch of other educational DVDs at home, and I want to watch each and every one of them. Reading a book is one thing, but when I get a visual of something, I find I learn better that way. I feel it sinks in more and I pick it up more quickly. I hope my next client needs extractions done because I feel so much more confident to do them now.  I used to dread it before, but now I’m excited!

Do you have any DVDs that have helped you and would recommend? Are there any other educational and resource tools that you could recommend besides watching DVDs or taking a class? Trade magazines are great and they keep us up-to-date on the latest information. Do you visit any related Web sites on a regular basis? Do you belong to an association and what do you get from it? How often do you go to trade shows?

P.S. Colleen posted a Q. about a diet. That one is very important. Natalie recommended (in comments) to read Dr. Perricone. I gave some idea, too.

Extractions are one of my favourites! I agree with Svetlana. Observation of other aestheticians are your best resource. Skin Inc. is a really nice Esthetic Industry Trend magazine that we get here at the spa. That’s one of my stand-bys to keep up to date on everything. I don’t know if you have them but Industry Source and Maly’s are two supply companies that also offer classes for continuing education as well as just technique. Check into those after you graduate!
    Hope that helps! =)

Hi, Trinity. Sorry, I’ve never been to LA, but I’d love to. Where are you located? My little spa is in Arlington, MA. Take a look: http://www.a-salon.com. I’d love, though, to meet you sometime, as well as with other enthusiasts of our industry from different parts of US. Want to exchange e-mails?

    Hi Sandra,

I was inquiring about the DVD you spoke about. On my previous comment I entered my email address incorrectly. I have since corrected it. I too was wondering if you can share the name of the DVD you have and where I can purchase it.

    Thanks.
    Melissa

Hi everyone! The name of the DVD that I purchased is called Skin Analysis & Extraction and you can purchase it through Allured Publishing’s bookstore: http://www.allured.com/bookstore. It was really very informative. I don’t know the name of the DVD we watched at school, but Mark Lees is in it. I’ll ask my instructor this week what the name of it is and I’ll let you all know. Thanks for inquiring about it!

Hi everyone! I asked my teacher last night what the name of the DVD was that we watched in class and she didn’t know. She said that it was in a set and it came with our books from Milady.

I, too, like to use videos for learning and reinforcing techniques, and wonder if anyone would be interested in setting up a system of loaning/borrowing DVD’s since they are so expensive. Sanitas in Boulder offers continuing education regularly, and the classes are really good and reasonably priced.

Also, after using steam for 10 minutes or so, you could use a metal Extractor gently to press the material from under the skin - it works wonders for me, lol…
