The Particulars of Peels

On Sunday, Sandra and I attended a peel seminar from 8-4pm. It was a very informative class and the skin care line we learned about seems really great. The products are known for being gentle, but very effective. These particular products are available only to physicians and licensed professionals. We went over different skin conditions, such as acne, rosacea, aging skin and hyperpigmentation. We talked about what kind of peel would be beneficial to people with these skin conditions and what kind of ingredients would help to improve their skin. The importance of exfoliation was stressed, and we also went over AHAs and BHAs and how they work to help the skin bring newer cells to the surface.

We were able to see four different peels demonstrated on some of our classmates. It was nice to see how to introduce the products, how to apply them and also to be able to understand how they work. After attending the class, I am really concerned with finding home care products for myself that are pH-balanced. I would also love to start getting monthly peels, but I don’t want to deal with my skin flaking off, although I have heard some people don’t experience this as much as others.

What’s really interesting is that our peel product that we use at school is removed from our clients’ skin after five minutes, while the peel product we saw at the seminar is left on for a few minutes, but not taken off and just neutralized with serums. You just keep adding on more layers and the client leaves with everything left on their face to penetrate throughout the day, which to me seems like it would be more effective. Thoughts?

It is exciting to have such great education. keep going to as many product demo’s as you can. Talk to product rep’s and work with as many different products until you find one you like.
I prefer the peels that are aloe based rather than alcohol based. More control, better application for professional skin care peels.
Many companies offer on site training so no worries. Call and ask for local educator to come and offer you product demo’s. Thank you

Sounds to me like you learned PCA peels. I use this product line at the spa and love it. You leave it on and then follow up with different serums as you mentioned. I have used several product lines for peels and feel this is one of the best. I would be curious to know if that is what you learned and if not, what product line you used.

I am personally OK with the leave-on peel but I am also comfortable with the peels you neutralize. The leave-on peels are usually TCA (tri-chloroacetic acid), Salicylic or Retinol based peels. Do you remember which one it was? TCA are not for inexperienced estheticians, so be careful. Monthly peels are great if you just use a 30-40% glycolic or Lactic acid. You will not be flaky if you limit yourself to these peels. Home based products do not have to be pH balanced since if you are trying to exfoliate your skin. It needs to be more acid than your skin to do a good job. It’s a great way to continue at home what you do with the monthly peel. All you have to do is use a moisturizer on top and follow with a sunscreen.

Eileen - Product demos are great and very informative. They give you a feel for what kind of stuff is out there. Aloe based peels sound like the way to go. Every product I have ever used with aloe in it does wonders for the skin. It’s gentle and soothing for all skin types. Alcohol is just so stripping/drying. I agree.

Christine - We did learn the PCA peels. It’s nice to hear from someone who uses these products and loves them! I’d like to do one on myself at home - but I’m a little nervous so I might wait until a fellow student can give me one at school.

Johanne - the peels were TCA. They have ingredients in them like lactic acid and ascorbic acid. The lady who demonstrated these to us said that we must be very careful and really follow our protocols. Thank you for all the great information!

I also use PCA’s line of peels in my practice. They are extremely effective with very little discomfort. The line can interact with each other for truly customized treatments. Their trainings are packed with information and they always give products or product credits that make the trainings a fantastic value.
