How Do I Establish a Good Waxing Technique?

Saturday was a busy day at school. A friend of mine came in for a half-leg wax, an organic spa facial and a back treatment. We decided to do the leg wax first. Knowing that my friend needed to be done with everything by 12:00, I wanted to balance my time so I could get each treatment done. I don’t mind waxing; I just don’t feel like I have a good technique down yet. I want to be able to wax legs faster and more efficiently without leaving any hair behind. To go back and tweeze individual hairs that did not come up with the wax seems so tedious. When I got to the second leg, I tried doing some speed waxing where I applied wax all over and then went in with one strip and got as much done as I could that way.

The organic spa facial went well. She tends to be more dry, but had a few breakouts, and we were able to do some extractions. The back treatment also went well, and since her back was in such good condition, we were able to focus more on relaxation than treatment.

In the afternoon, a regular client of mine came in for an oxygenating facial. She really wanted her skin to feel clean and fresh, so this was a good choice for her. There were a lot of clogged pores, and the clogs seemed to be just sitting on top of her skin waiting to come out. The exfoliating mask and the steam helped to get rid of this. I’ve actually noticed a lot of women in their 30s and 40s that seem to have this happening to their skin. Is regular exfoliation the best way to get rid of this?

This has nothing to do with the topic. I just wanted to comment on the sexist style of this site and most sites sponsored by Skin Inc. MEN are ESTHETICIANS too. Doing skin care doesn’t have to be “girly” like this blog, like Skin Inc. Magazine, and like most spas in this country. In Europe spas are unisex and staffed by both men and women. Skin Inc. needs to start recognizing male estheticians and the male client. It’s not a girls world ladies!!!

Colleen - Love your name (my daughter’s!). Regarding you question on speeding up the waxing, I have found that the thinner you apply the wax, the quicker and cleaner your end result will be. Also, when you’re out there on your own, throw out the wooden sticks and get yourself a small metal spatula (try Cosmopro.) T

Regarding the comedones sitting on top of skin, summer seems to bring them out. I think sunscreen, sweat and sunglasses are major contributors. Make sure they’re washing their face 2x per day, using an exfoliator 2x per week (any more would take off that protective acid mantle) and see you regularly!

Jason … right on! You’re absolutely right! The industry DOES need to pay more attention to the male estheticians. Hear that SkinInc??? Keep up the good work! And enjoy CA … Ahhh I love SF!

    Hi Jason,
Thank you for your feedback. As editor in chief in Skin Inc. magazine, I greatly value your feedback, comments and suggestions, as I do with all of our readers. I completely agree with you that men are estheticians, spa owners and spa managers, as well. Since you feel so strongly about our coverage in the magazine, I would love more feedback from you: Are there specific articles/features that you have found discriminatory, and what suggestions might you offer so that we can improve this in our future issues? Please feel free to contact me directly, or through this blog—my e-mail is taschetta-millane@allured.com, and my phone number is 630-344-6079. I welcome feedback from anyone else who has suggestions and comments, as well.

Thank you again, Jason, and I do look forward to hearing your suggestions. Melinda
